Didi Gregorius Powers Yankees To Victory In Home Opener (Highlights)

The Yankees have snapped their two-game losing streak with an exciting victory in their home opener against the Rays thanks to Didi Gregorius.

  • New York Yankees: 11 (3-2)
  • Toronto Blue Jays: 4 (1-4)
  • American League, FINAL
  • Yankee Stadium, Bronx, NY

Baseball is finally back in the Bronx and the New York Yankees made sure to not disappoint their home crowd on their first day back.

Jordan Montgomery started the game for the Bronx Bombers and had a pretty solid outing to begin his sophomore campaign. He went five innings while only allowing two hits and one earned runs, however, he did surrender four walks.

Aaron Boone had the quick hook on the left-hander and pulled him before the start of the sixth inning and brought out right-hander Jonathan Holder, big mistake. Holder would only record one out and would give up four hits and have three earned runs under his belt.

Tommy Kahnle would be brought in during the middle of the sixth to try and make sense of Holder’s mess but he would be unable to, letting the tying runs score and leaving Yankees fans questioning yet another one of Boone’s managerial decisions.

On the offensive side of things, Didi Gregorius stole the show with two clutch home runs which really put the Yankees ahead. His second one came in the bottom of the seventh with two men on base to really put the score out of reach.

Giancarlo Stanton did strike out five times throughout the game, but he was relieved by the tremendous game Gregorius had.

David Robertson came in to pitch the top of the eighth and would throw a clean inning and Chasen Shreve was brought out to wrap it all up in the ninth with a seven-run lead.

Sir Didi Strikes Again

If it has not been made clear already, Didi Gregorius made it as clear as day today that he is the most clutch player in the Yankees’ lineup.

After one home run in the bottom of the third as well as another three-run bomb in the bottom of the seventh, Sir Didi really proved how truly amazing he is.

He would strike again with a bases-loaded single in the bottom of the eighth to add two more RBIs to his daily total, leaving him with eight RBIs at the end of the game.

What’s Next

The Yankees will continue their series with Tampa Bay on Thursday afternoon in what seems like has the potential to be a pitcher’s duel.

Luis Severino will take the mound for New York while Blake Snell will take the mound for the Rays, both coming off spectacular first starts of the season.

First pitch is scheduled for 1:05 PM ET on YES Network or can be listened at WFAN 660/101.9FM.
