New York Yankees vs. Toronto Blue Jays, 4/22/18: Gleyber Torres Makes MLB Debut

On Sunday afternoon in the Bronx, highly touted prospect Gleyber Torres will make his MLB debut for the New York Yankees.

It is finally time for Yankees top prospect Gleyber Torres to make his MLB debut on Sunday afternoon against the Toronto Blue Jays.

Torres will be joining a Yankees lineup that had tremendous expectations entering the season, but have been the definition of inconsistent to begin the season.

Taking the mound for New York will be the rotation’s ace, Luis Severino, who was nothing but dominant in his last start on Monday against the Marlins where he hurled six one-hit innings with eight strikeouts.

Severino has been as good as the Yankees expected him to be so far to begin the season, with a 2.63 ERA and 28 strikeouts, he is off to a hot start. The right-hander pitched on Opening Day against Toronto when he threw 5.2 shutout innings while only giving up one hit and striking out seven.

Opposing Severino for the Blue Jays will be veteran left-hander and former Yankee himself, Jaime Garcia. He has been okay in his start to his Blue Jays career despite only completing the sixth inning just once this season.

In three career appearances at Yankees Stadium, Garcia has a 2.20 ERA, but the majority of these appearances were also earlier in Garcia’s career when he was a more dominant pitcher.

Between the debut of Gleyber Torres, Luis Severino taking the mound and former Yankee Jaime Garcia returning to the Bronx, it should be a fun one this afternoon.

Lineups

Player To Watch

Gleyber Torres

It is no shocker that Today’s player to watch will be Gleyber Torres. All eyes will be planted directly on him in his MLB debut on Sunday.

In 14 games at Triple-A this season, Torres is slashing .347/.393/.510 with a home run and 11 RBIs. However, we still have to see how these numbers will translate against major league pitching.

Torres will be looking to make a good first impression in the Bronx and based on how past Yankees made their debuts in spectacular fashion (Aaron Judge, Tyler Austin, Clint Frazier) we can expect something special today.

Honorable Mention

Giancarlo Stanton

Look out for Giancarlo Stanton as well during Sunday afternoon’s matchup, especially considering his bat has been heating up lately and because he has dominated Garcia throughout his career.

In 11 career at-bats against the left-hander, Stanton is batting .636 with three home runs and six RBIs. Expect Stanton to have a big game on Sunday in the Bronx.
