Unhinged Yankees Prospect Report 5/8-5/15

Unhinged Yankees will give you a weekly look into what is going on down in the New York Yankees prized minor league system.

Welcome, to the first edition of the Unhinged Yankees Prospect Report. This will be a weekly blog focused entirely on keeping the readers informed of what’s going on in the farm system. It will be published every week and it will cover the previous Monday through Sunday. We’ll give you news/notes on each level and also include a hitter and pitcher of the week. Enjoy!

Scranton Wilkes-Barre RailRiders

News/Notes
  • Justus Sheffield was placed on the seven-day DL on Saturday with shoulder stiffness. It seems to be more of a precaution and he should be ready to go after the seven days are up.
  • Clint Frazier made a slight tweak to his swing in order to get his timing down, and it seems to be working out for him.
  • Thairo Estrada was placed on the seven-day DL with a wrist injury.
  • Brandon Drury was returned from his rehab assignment and was optioned to the RailRiders.
  • Brady Lail continues to impress in his move to the pen, striking out 20 in 19 innings pitched while posting a 1.89 ERA.
  • Cody Carroll has caught the eye of Bobby Mitchell as someone who has progressed way faster then he thought he would. We could see him in the Yankee’s bullpen later in the summer.
  • Chance Adams continues to look for consistency as he got lit up for five runs in his last start.
Hitter of the Week

Clint Frazier: (11-25, 2 BB, 6 R, 2 RBI, 3 2B, 2 HR) Frazier has dominated ever since making that tweak in his swing. We’ll see if that carries over for the rest of the season.

Pitcher of the Week

Josh Rogers: (7.0 IP, 4 H, 1 BB, 5 SO, W) Rogers picked up the win in his only start this previous week. On the season he has posted a 2.61 ERA in seven starts.

Trenton Thunder

News/Notes
Hitter of the Week

Abiatal Avelino(11-26, 3 BB, 3 R, 2 RBI, 1 2B) Yet another impressive week for Avelino. The 23-year-old is hitting .400 on the season in 12 games.

Pitcher of the Week

Erik Swanson(7 IP, 3 H, 2 BB, 9 SO) Swanson might just be the biggest story of the Yankee’s system thus far this season. He is 5-0 with a 0.52 ERA, striking out 44 batters in 34.2 innings pitched.

Tampa Tarpons

News/Notes
Hitter of the Week

Estevan Florial: (7-24, 4 BB, 5 R, 1 RBI, 2 2B) The highly touted prospect has a .250 batting average but has posted a .354 on-base percentage. He has struck out 42 times in just 124 at-bats which is something he’ll need to improve if he wants to move up.

Pitcher of the Week

Michael King: (8.2 IP, 3 H, 8 SO) King was dominant in his one start, adding to his 1.53 ERA in six starts. He could be a candidate to make the move up if he continues to dominate in Tampa.

Charleston RiverDogs

News/Notes
  • Don Thompson-Williams was activated from the DL.
  • Garrett Whitlock was named the South Atlantic League’s Pitcher of the Week
  • Whitlock was also promoted to Tampa from Charleston.

There wasn’t a whole lot of news out of Charleston this week, hence the two notes. Sometimes these lower levels tend to not have as much going on, especially this early in the season.

Hitter of the Week

Dom Thompson-Williams(7-18, 3 R, 5 RBI, 1 2B, 2 HR) Thompson-Williams did not take long to make his mark after coming off the disabled list. The line above was largely in part to the RiverDogs game on the 13th in which Thompson Williams went four for six, with two home runs and five RBI’s.

Pitcher of the Week

Garrett Whitlock: ( 6 IP, 1 ER, 4 SO) Prior to this start, Whitlock had thrown 25 scoreless innings. Although he couldn’t continue that streak, he did keep up the great start that he has gotten off to. He now heads to Tampa to continue that hot start.
