New York Yankees @ Toronto Blue Jays, 6/5-6/6: Series Preview

The Yankees head to Toronto for a two-game series against the Blue Jays, looking to keep the ball rolling ahead of the upcoming Subway Series.

  • New York Yankees (38-18)
  • Toronto Blue Jays (26-33)
  • 6/5 & 6/6, Start Times: (7:07 PM, 7:07 PM) ET
  • Rogers Centre, Toronto, CA

The Yankees will continue their road trip with a two-game set against the Toronto Blue Jays. The road trip has treated the Yankees well so far as they head into Toronto 3-1 on the trip and winners of five of their last six.

After taking both games of the rain-shortened series in Baltimore. The Yankees made their way to Detroit for a doubleheader to make up the rainouts from April 14 and 15.

Luis Severino, the Yankees ace, took the mound in game one of the day/night doubleheader and dominated yet again. Backed by a strong performance by the Yankees offense, Severino went eight innings allowing just one earned run while striking out ten, leading the Yankees to a 7-4 victory.

In game two Domingo German was solid on the mound allowing four earned runs over 6 1/3 innings. However, the Yankees bats couldn’t come up with the big hit as they left 17 men on base sending them into the Toronto series with a loss and ending their five-game winning streak.

Tuesday (6/5)

C.C Sabathia (2-1, 3.73 ERA) vs. Marco Estrada (2-6, 5.68 ERA)

Looking to get back on track, Sabathia will take the hill in the first game of the series.

Over Sabathia’s last four starts he’s 0-1 with an era of 7.96. The lefty has failed to pitch past the fifth inning in each of those starts. With Toronto struggling of late, this could be a prime opportunity for the big guy to get back in the win column.

Opposing Severino will be the crafty right-hander, Marco Estrada. It’s been a rough year for Estrada so far. Having taken a loss in each of his last four starts, he comes into the series with a 2-6 record and a 5.68 era.

Estrada has made two starts against the Yankees this year in which he is 1-0 with an even 6.00 era. The Blue Jays came out on top in both games.

Sonny Gray (3-3, 5.48) vs. Sam Gaviglio (2-1, 3.32)

Let’s see which Sonny Gray shows up this time.

Gray is coming off his second-best start of the season in which he pitched six innings of one-run ball while striking out six. It was also the first start time this season that Gray didn’t walk a batter.

Hopefully, Gray can finally build off a strong outing and get on a little roll here.

Sam Gaviglio is making just his fourth start of the season for the Blue Jays. Giviglio has been solid on the mound for the Jays since filing in for the injured Jaime Garcia posting a 3.68 era in three starts.

Continued Success vs Toronto

Back in April, the Yankees hit their stride during a four-game set against Toronto. This series was the turning point for this team as their offense finally woke up and got the Yankees going on their nine games winning streak.

During that series with the Blue Jays, the Yankees hit .284 while hitting six home runs and averaging 6.5 runs a game.

Hopefully, the Bombers can continue to find success against this struggling Blue Jays team that comes in losing 7 of their last 10.

Predictions

This is a perfect series for both Sabathia and Gray to get on a little roll and I expect them to do just that. The Blue Jays are without former MVP Josh Donaldson and are playing very poorly of late.

Look for the Yankees to pull out two wins as they head into the Subway Series.
