It’s almost time for pitchers and catchers to report for Spring Training so let’s take a look at five Yankees who have something to prove in 2020.
With just less than a month away from pitchers and catchers reporting, baseball is in the air. The New York Yankees have a big season ahead as an organization. And with that, they will have a certain number of players looking to prove themselves during the 2020 campaign.
The Yankees are bringing another star-studded roster to the Bronx. It became even more so when they inked starting pitcher Gerrit Cole to the largest contract at the position in MLB history. From having one of the best starting rotations in the league to boasting a lineup that truly might not have a flaw in 2020, the Yankees are set up for success. But even they have players that have a chip on their shoulder.
From coming back from injury to simply bouncing back in terms of production, here are five Yankees with something to prove during the 2020 season:
1. Miguel Andujar | 3B | Age: 24
Arguably the player with the most to prove in a Yankees uniform is Andujar. The Dominican Republic native is coming off of a lost 2019 season that saw him play just 12 games while recording 49 plate appearances. His second qualified season was cut short after electing to undergo season-ending shoulder surgery to repair a torn labrum in his shoulder.
Not only did Andujar have to sit back and watch Gio Urshela succeed on both sides of the ball, but now the former has to do what he can to win his job back. No one is forgetting the incredible hitting Andujar displayed in 2018. He recorded a 130 OPS+ and was second in the Rookie of the Year voting. But even that is something he must prove is true.
Andujar has to come back strong beginning in spring training. He’s looking bigger from some offseason videos while his fielding looks to be slightly improved. Though we won’t know if that’s true until game action. Andujar has a lot to prove in 2020, likely more than most.
