The MLB Draft will only be five rounds this year, but the Yankees will still look to make an impact. Which five players could be their first-round targets?
As the altered 2020 MLB Draft approaches, the Yankees are two picks down, as their second and fifth-round selections have been taken away as a result of them signing prized free agent Gerrit Cole this winter. With the club still in possession of their first-round selection, let’s take a look at some prospects the Yankees could have their sights on at choice 28.
1. RHP – JT Ginn, Mississippi State
The 28th overall slot in the draft is certainly a valuable selection, but the Yankees are certainly known to take a bit of a risk with their often late first-round draft picks. See Clarke Schmidt, for example. Ginn, a right-hander out of Mississippi State was a projected top 10 pick just a few months ago according to Mason McRae of prospects365.com, but injury and durability concerns will certainly allow him to slip.

With the MLB draft only being 5 rounds, the Yankees have the opportunity to sign any prospects who weren’t drafted for a max of $20,000. This could bridge the team to be willing to follow a Schmidt-like approach and take a flyer on the 20-year-old, giving him time to rehab, develop, and blossom into the talent scouts have already seen while he’s been healthy.
